Meet the Founder Caitlin Jo Dean

Caitlin first attended
a Girl Guides camp in
Belgium in 1999, and
she was immediately
hooked. She’s been involved ever since, as a guide and then as a leader. Participating in Girl Guides has been one of the best experiences of Caitlin’s life.

Caitlin graduated from Yale University in 2005, then worked in Brussels, Belgium setting up a new program for Yale and working as a journalist. She moved to Washington, D.C., where she worked on foreign policy and defense issues for U.S. Senator Dick Durbin. For years, Caitlin had wished that American girls had the opportunity to become girl guides, so in 2008, she decided to leave her job and start Girl Guides USA.

Caitlin loves the outdoors. She’s hiked in the Grand Canyon, bicycled across the United States, canoed on rivers and lakes, climbed mountains, and snowshoed on six-foot drifts. Caitlin is certified in CPR and wilderness first aid, and trained to lead youth hiking, camping and backpacking trips.
